The whole idea behind these designs is a human who has to fight in an android war and protect the princess. Based on cyberpunk and with great inspiration from japanese culture, as well as the movies "The Last Samurai" and "Ghost in the Shell"
Robots here love the concept of humans personal custumization, wearing clothes and changing certain body parts and accesories. Meanwhile, since he's a human, he needs to have a strong armor to protect himself as the attacks come from machines.
